STI - Two PhD Positions - Polymer Synthesis (LP)
Mission
The Polymers Laboratory at EPFL (lp.epfl.ch) has two open PhD positions for a project that focuses on the design and
synthesis of block copolymers that will mimic the structure and properties of mussel-derived proteins.
The two positions are part of a larger, multidisciplinary project that involves other partners in Switzerland and in
Canada and that seeks to integrate expertise from biology, materials science and polymer chemistry to produce strong
and tough synthetic polymer materials using design and processing principles inspired by nature
Main duties and responsibilities
As a PhD Student, you will be expected to:
- Have full responsibility for your own dissertation
- Research in close collaboration with industry partners
- Experiment design and execution ;
- Analyze and interpret experimental results;
- Write scientific articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals;
- Present at international conferences.
- Supervise student projects and basic administrative support
Profile
We are looking for candidates with a strong background in polymer synthesis, and in particular with controlled
polymerization techniques, and an interest to work on an interdisciplinary project at the interface of biology and
materials science.
- A MSc degree
- Good communication skills and willingness to work as part of a team
- Enthusiasm, scientific curiosity, eager to learn, good organizational skills, rigor in experimental work
- High level of motivation for academic research work
- Fluency in English. [French / German/ Italian would be an asset ]
