Are you passionate about advancing research in space geodesy to tackle critical global challenges? Are you experienced
in satellite gravimetry and eager to explore cutting-edge AI and machine learning technologies in this field?
Join our young and dynamic team at the Chair of Space Geodesy, led by Prof. Benedikt Soja. We are at the forefront of
developing innovative methods for space- and ground-based geodetic applications, enabling long-term, continuous, and
real-time monitoring of the Earth and its environment. Our team has rapidly gained prominence for our work in applying
machine learning to geodetic problems, including spatio-temporal modeling, prediction, and anomaly detection.
Job description
The selected candidate will be responsible for shaping the gravity-related research conducted at the Chair of Space
Geodesy and building a compelling line of research that incorporates aspects of machine learning. Ideally, the position
will concentrate on the application of deep learning to satellite gravimetry data from the GRACE and GRACE-FO missions
to address key issues such as the detection of hydroclimatic extreme events, enhancing the spatial and/or temporal
resolution of GRACE(-FO) products, reconstructing past and/or predicting future hydrological conditions, separation of
water storage components, or fusing gravity measurements with GNSS, InSAR, satellite altimetry, or
hydrological/environmental models. A focus will be on the development of machine learning-based strategies and
algorithms for such purposes, utilizing concepts from probabilistic, explainable or physics-informed machine learning.
In this framework, the postdoc will conduct original research, with the specific topic being flexible and ideally
benefitting from the applicant’s previous experience. While the focus of the position is on research, the postdoc will
also be involved in teaching activities related to physical geodesy, the supervision of student works and the guidance
of doctoral students.
Profile
- PhD in geodesy, geosciences, physics, computer science or a related field
- Strong background in satellite gravimetry; extensive experience with GRACE(-FO) data or products
- Experience with machine learning methods is advantageous; willingness to learn these techniques is essential
- Solid foundation in mathematics, physics, data exploration and programming
- Fluency in English (written and spoken); knowledge of German is advantageous
- Strong collaboration and communication skills
- Ability to conduct, present and publish scientific results with integrity
