PhD Student Position in Peptide Chemistry 80 %
Start of employment The employment should ideally start as soon as possible or upon agreement.
A PhD Student position is available in the group of Prof. Dr. Karl Gademann, located in the Department of Chemistry at
the University of Zurich (Switzerland). Our group combines the synthesis of natural and non-natural compounds with
biological studies to answer questions about structure, function, biosynthesis, and mechanism of action. Please find
further information on our website.
We offer an exciting PhD Student position in a stimulating and challenging environment directed towards the
investigation of novel peptides and derivatives at the interface of chemistry and biology. You will be trained in
automated peptide synthesis technology, synthetic organic chemistry, and analytical methods. The ambitious PhD project
centers around the total synthesis of peptide natural products and selective peptide modification reactions and is set
in a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art equipment and infrastructure, ensuring its successful
implementation. Furthermore, you will have unique opportunities to develop a strong interdisciplinary portfolio,
fostering personal and professional growth.
Your responsibilities
Within this project, you will employ a variety of tools in the broader field of peptide natural product synthesis and
modification. You will design, synthesize and modify amino acids, and will use them in peptide synthesis using
automated and manual synthesis platforms. You will be driving the characterization of chemically synthesized peptides
using various analytical techniques (UHPLC, LCMS, CD, etc.).
Your profile
We are looking for a highly motivated, curious, and enthusiastic PhD student for a four-year research project at the
University of Zurich. You should hold a Master's degree in chemistry or similar fields, and should have solid expertise
in organic chemistry. Expertise in peptide chemistry (SPPS) is a plus, but not required. You are adept at working in an
open, interdisciplinary, and collaborative environment that you will contribute to with curiosity, scientific agility,
self-motivation, and strong communication skills.
Information on your application
Your application should contain:
- letter of motivation
- curriculum vitae
- short summary of past research accomplishments
- transcripts of your academic records from your University, and a copy of your degree
- contact details of two referees (e.g. your M.Sc. thesis supervisor)
Please submit your application as a single PDF . Incomplete applications will not be considered.
